Dose of Depth
This is Dose of Depth podcast. I’m your host, Deborah Lukovich, and I invite you to be curious about your unique experience of being human. In this podcast, we’ll explore the deeper meaning of ordinary life experiences through conversation, stories, and education. You might have a serious ah-ha moment, or you might be amused by the movie your life seems to be imitating, or you might just be entertained by one of my awkward stories. I’m hoping you’ll become more aware of those moments when a deeper part of you is prompting you to see things differently and maybe even go a new direction. So, let’s get started. Deborah

Do You Know a Trans Person? A Chat w/Aaron Baker, Transgender Activist
In this episode, I have a conversation with Aaron Baker, dedicated transgender activist and social media influencer. She focuses on sharing the joy of the trans experience, along with clarifying the history, science, and origins of the concepts of gender and sex. Her profiles, @aaronbaker and @aaronbaker.joy, have earned her a significant following, with her videos reaching over 5 million views. Her most popular videos are about parenting LGBTQ children and the problems with Georgia SB 140 (the bill that bans gender affirming care for minors.)
I found Aaron on Instagram. One of her videos came up and I think she was sharing an experience that day of going into a store and getting looks from people. I was moved by her honest and vulnerable sharing of feeling hurt by how others treated her just because of what she looked like. At the same time, her courage was on full display. I started following her, offering encouraging comments, complimenting her on hair, makeup, dresses. Over time, you could see how transitioning to her gender caused her to blossom and be happier. Who could be against that?
Trans people are one of many groups that are targeted and discriminated against simply because they do not conform to social norms.
As with other groups that over time became accepted and embraced, Aaron knows the formula goes something like this: exposure leads to empathy, which leads to acceptance, which leads to improved civil rights outcomes.
On the other hand, we are living through a time that warns us that the rights of once marginalized groups are never to be taken for granted. In fact, much progress for women’s right to self-determination has been reversed and women are dying and suffering because of the violent last stand of rigid and stagnant misogynist beliefs.
So, Aaron is one brave soul. Enjoy our chat!
